Creating an Alarm Clock in the System
Tray with Visual Studio 2005
Ever since the earliest versions of Windows,
it has always surprised me that there is no built-in
alarm clock. For this column I decided to see
what it would take to use Visual Studio 2005 to
create a simple alarm clock that would hide to
the system tray, display a notification, and optionally
play a sound.

Top Ten Myths about Iraq 2006
Myth #8. "Iraq is the central front in the
war on terror." From the beginning of history
until 2003 there had never been a suicide bombing
in Iraq. There was no al-Qaeda in Baath-ruled
Iraq. When Baath intelligence heard that Abu Musab
al-Zarqawi might have entered Iraq, they grew
alarmed at such an "al-Qaeda" presence and put
out an APB on him!

Clocky, the hiding alarm clock: intriguingly
ridiculous
When Clocky goes off, you've got one chance
to wake up. If you go for the snooze, Clocky fires
up its wheels and rolls off your night stand to
go hide. Yep, it runs away. It's a design choice
that can only be described as "bold."

In Soviet Russia, Gas Equals Power.
European Union officials are alarmed at the
heavy-handed tactics used by Moscow while the
West has been preoccupied with the Middle East;
Russia's use of energy supplies as a political
weapon should be a wake-up call to Britain and
the West to deal urgently with the threat.

Knitting blog raising money for charity
hit by cease and decease letter.
The knitting blog raising funds for charity
has been asked to cease and decease using (apparently
innocent) terms supposedly trademarked by Publishers
Clearing House. [...]Apparently I put two completely
innocent words together in a blog title and once
these words were together: KABOOOM! I set off
alarms all around the trademark world.[...]

Japan Alarmed By Contamination Despite
GMO Planting Ban
Contamination is occurring in places where
the gmo varieties were never approved as field
crops. This suggests even gmo seed transported
without extreme care can contaminate vast areas.
Soy in five provinces was found to have contamination
in up to 66% of the store products and none is
approved to grow. Very bad news for everyone but
Monsanto.

Hidden codes on PA systems
Londoners will probably be aware of Inspector
Sands, not a man but a coded announcement that
can be heard at Tube and major rail stations:
"Would Inspector Sands please come to the control
room immediately." It sounds when an alarm is
tripped and if a member of staff doesn’t clear
the problem before a set time elapses. More hidden
codes here...
